La Salle toughens vacant building policy

Posted by wlpo on March 12, 2014

You can tell by driving by some building in La Salle that nobody is living there. What you can’t tell is how long it has been vacant or if it’s unsafe.

Changes to the vacant building ordinance in La Salle should make it easier for building inspector Chris Covert to get inside properties to see with what the city is dealing.  After a month or more of delays, the city council approved the changes Tuesday night.

Covert says the new rules allow property owners to be fined for not maintaining their building.

The city more recently has been aggressively going after vacant and dilapidated homes.  Several were demolished last year but Covert says there are many more, both commercial and residential properties that have been vacant for years.  He says it takes time but he has been working in it.
