Remembering NIU shooting victims

Posted by wlpo on February 14, 2014

Shortly after 3pm today, five bells were rung on the Northern Illinois University campus honoring five people killed in a shooting there six years ago on this date.

One of them was Julianna Gehant of Meriden in LaSalle County.

A former student opened fire in a lecture hall on Valentine’s Day in 2008 killing five and injuring more than a dozen.

The University had planned a more subdued rememberance this year. Governor Pat Quinn said it’s a day to reflect and use the example of the slain students’ families and communities to find strength in difficult times.
