The absence of an ocean hasn’t stopped an Illinois Valley Community College instructor from teaching an ocean science course and writing a paper about it.
Mike Phillips is headed to the 2014 Ocean Sciences Meeting next month in Honolulu, Hawaii. There he’ll present his paper, “Design your own marine organism: An exercise for introductory oceanography courses.” The paper earned him a $2,500 grant from the National Science Foundation.
Phillips has been teaching at IVCC for 17 years.
