Mazon man killed this morning

A trip in the winter elements late this morning was the last for a Mazon man. Grundy County Coroner John Callahan says Arvid Johnson was northbound on Route 47, north of Mazon, when, for some reason, he lost control. His car was struck by one coming the opposite way. Arvid Johnson was pronounced dead late this morning in Morris Hospital . Callahan and the Grundy County Sheriff are investigating.

IVCC instructor to speak at Ocean Sciences meeting in Hawaii

The absence of an ocean hasn’t stopped an Illinois Valley Community College instructor from teaching an ocean science course and writing a paper about it.

Mike Phillips is headed to the 2014 Ocean Sciences Meeting next month in Honolulu, Hawaii.  There he’ll present his paper, “Design your own marine organism: An exercise for introductory oceanography courses.”  The paper earned him a $2,500 grant from the National Science Foundation. 

Phillips has been teaching at IVCC for 17 years.

U.S. Postal Service to deliver parcels Sunday

You usually don’t see the mail truck on Sunday but you could this weekend.  Because of the extremely cold temperatures forecast for Monday and Tuesday, La Salle Postmaster Kevin Christiansen says several employees will be delivering packages Sunday in and around La Salle and Peru.  Christiansen says they’re trying to have less to deliver when it’s colder.

Learn about birds and eagles this weekend at Starved Rock

Bundle up and watch the bald eagles feasting on the Illinois River.  The annual Illinois Audubon Society Bald Eagle Watch Weekend is Saturday and Sunday.  Kids can play in the discovery room at the Starved Rock Visitor Center that will be open until 4pm Saturday and from 9am-4pm Sunday.

You can watch programs about birds of prey at the Illinois Waterway Visitors Center and Starved Rock Lodge.  The lodge will also have their trolley running to give you a ride to the different events.
