Suicide prevention walk raises more than $7,000

Posted by wlpo on October 21, 2013

It’s true that money can’t buy happiness but it can be spent on programs designed to help people realize the signs of depression and prevent suicides.

People in the Illinois Valley have proven that they care about the people who have died from suicide by participating in the “Out of the Darkness” Community Walk.  It was Saturday at Baker Lake in Peru.  After county up the donations, the walk raised $7,310 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

An estimated 200 people took part, many as part of teams remembering a loved one.

If you didn’t make it to the walk but would still like to donate, contributions will be accepted until December.  You can donate online at the walk’s web page.

Detour in place for Route 251 closure

Posted by wlpo on October 21, 2013

If you usually take Route 251 between Tonica and Lostant you might not be able to starting Monday.  A railroad crossing in Lostant is being rebuilt and it will have Route 251 at the crossing closed for approximately seven days.

IDOT has a detour set up directing you to take Interstate 39 from Route 18 and County Highway 54.
