Rabies under control in Illinois

Posted by wlpo on September 29, 2013

A good reason to fear and hate bats. They are Illinois’s major source of rabies. Sixty three infected bats were discovered in 2012 – according to the Illinois Department of Public Health’s website. But, it’s just under half of the cases in 2010. The good news – bats are practically the sole carrier of rabies in Illinois. With the exception of 2011 and a rabid cow, the state rabies cases have been limited to bats since 2006. LaSalle county found one rabid bat in 2012. Bureau and Putnam had no rabies cases. Yesterday was World Rabies Day. It’s also the anniversary of Louis Pasteur’s death. Pasteur along with others developed the firsts rabies vaccine.
