Fundraiser for bloodied Civil War flag
Posted by wlpo on September 22, 2013
The “Poundstone Civil War” flag needs a cleaning, but its blood stains will stay. The flag – representing LaSalle county’s first regiment – got stained as a rural Grand Ridge resident, Sgt. George Poundstone, lead a charge against Jackson, Mississippi. Poundstone fell wounded and placed the flag inside his uniform. The South later returned it after the war. David Reed, president of the Streator Historical Society, says tonite’s dinner at the Streator VFW will help raise a portion of the funds to have the flag put under special UV glass. If enough money is raised, a Streator resident will offer matching funds. The chicken spagetti dinner is from 4 – 7:30 in the VFW just south of Streator City park.
