State Health Officials Respond To Rash Outbreak In Marseilles

Posted by wlpo on August 15, 2013

If you believe surveys, well over a thousand people who did the Spartan Race obstacle course in Marseilles developed some type of rash after the competition late last month.

The Illinois Department of Public Health says of 17 hundred survey responders, 73 percent of the runners developed a rash after the race.  Nearly 25 percent of the survey responders said they’ve had to miss school or work because of the itchy rash.

Public health officials say the most likely cause of the rash is many poison ivy plants were crushed when obstacles were made.  This released poison ivy oil into mud which runners crawled through during the Spartan Race.  Health officials say the poison ivy oil probably went thru the clothes and was on the skin of runners for several hours.

State health officials plan to recommend things to race organizers to prevent a rash outbreak from happening again.
