Attic fire damages Oglesby home

Posted by wlpo on February 9, 2013

If you smell smoke, something is burning.  An attic fire in Oglesby wasn’t noticed until the morning after a couple starting smelling smoke.

Fire Chief Ron Popurello says Kyle Oberholz and his wife smelled smoke Friday night but didn’t see any smoke or fire.  They called the fire department after still smelling smoke Saturday morning and seeing smoke coming through the eves.

Popurello says it was an electric fire that was smoldering in the insulation.  It burned through three rafters.  Firefighters had to pull the ceiling down in one room.  The couple was planning to stay with family.

Utica to be setting for next educational film

Posted by wlpo on February 9, 2013

While teenage girls are already planning for this year’s prom, an area firefighter and alderman is getting ready for prom 2014.  And no, he’s not picking out a tux.

Rodney Perez, the man behind the educational film Operation Prom-ise, says he’s been busy turning the effort into a non-profit, creating a board and raising money for the next film.

The Utica and Starved Rock area will be setting.  Perez wants to stage a two-car crash on prom night and some how work in a van full of women taking part in a bachelorette party.  Perez uses high school students from LP, St. Bede, Putnam County and Hall.

It would be the third film for the program.  He says the community viewing of the film would still be held at LP High School.

A interview with Perez is available at the AM 1220 WLPO news page.
