Cherry School officials considering a merger with Ladd or Dimmick

Posted by wlpo on January 11, 2013

Class is in session at Cherry Grade School but two years from now there’s a strong possibility that won’t be the case.  School officials are considering a merger with either Ladd or Dimmick school districts.

Superintendent James Boyle says four years ago he examined the budget and concluded they could stay open if they made cuts.  He says now they have had to borrow and they have to consider a merger.

He says they’re considering Ladd and Dimmick because they’re adjacent to Cherry’s district and the districts are similar in that they’re small and rural.  They’re also considering classes and activities.

Annexation would also change property tax rates.  Dimmick’s tax rate is currently a dollar and 65 cents while Ladd’s is three dollars and five cents.  Cherry’s tax rate is higher than both.

There are 60 students and six teachers at Cherry Grade School.  They would like to close the school at the end of the 2013-2014 school year.  The decision to annex would be decided by the school boards.

You can learn more about the finances driving their decision to merge during a meeting at 6:30pm Thursday in the Cherry Grade School Gym.   An interview with Dr. Boyle is up at the AM 1220 WLPO news page.
