Committees will consider rental property registry in Peru

Posted by wlpo on December 17, 2012

Do you know who owns the rental property in your neighborhood?  Keeping the owner’s information on file is part of the reason Peru City officials are considering a rental property registry.

Frank Taylor is the building and zoning inspector.  He says he can usually find out who owns buildings by calling the county for tax information.  He says he has a harder time with vacant properties, typically foreclosed homes owned by banks.  Before a registry is created he wants a committee to come up with the specifics like fees and timelines.

Alderman Rodney Perez is the one suggesting they have a registry.  He thinks they should at least keep track of the multi-unit owners. He told the city council Monday night that he was recently contacted by someone who wasn’t sure who owned their rental that apparently only had one smoke detector, no carbon monoxide detector and a leaky roof.

The Public Health and Safety Committee and the Public Property Committee will both consider the registry.
