New phone scam received in Peru

Posted by wlpo on December 4, 2012

If a person with a foreign accent calls to say that you’re entitled to government surplus money don’t believe them.

Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei is warning about a scam phone call that someone in Peru recently received on his cell phone.  The person on the other line claimed to be calling from Washington D.C. and wanted to know checking or savings account information so they could deposit money into the account.

The man who took the call was smart enough to hang up and call the police.  Never give bank account information to strangers over the phone and the U.S. government doesn’t have a surplus of money.
