Isaac Postpones Ottawa Fireworks Until Monday

Posted by wlpo on September 1, 2012

There will be no fireworks tonight in Ottawa and you can blame it on Isaac.

The rescheduled Ottawa First fireworks display is now happening Monday night at 8.  There will be kid’s activities and bands before the fireworks in the Jordan block area.

The original July 4th fireworks in Ottawa ended early because of an electrical malfunction.  The non-profit group Ottawa First who raises money for the display then picked September 1st as a redo date but rain from Isaac has ended those plans.

Scouting Packages Sent To LP Rivals

Posted by wlpo on September 1, 2012

About five hours before the LP Cavaliers were to play their varsity football home opener, players and their parents found out that information had been mailed to at least six of the teams on their schedule.

Superintendent Steve Wrobleski called a meeting Friday afternoon in the school auditorium.  He says the package received at several schools yesterday included offensive and defensive schemes and information on coaches.

More disturbingly, Wrobleski says it included the names and positions of 22 varsity players including their physical and mental strengths and weaknesses.  It also included if the player had been injured and if so which part of their body and if the player had suffered a concussion.  It also suggested one player that had been injured could be taken out so LP wouldn’t be able to score.  Wrobleski likened it to the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal.

The Cavs’ season opened last Friday against Rock Island Alleman which had received the package prior to the game. Wrobleski says the investigation involves the school’s attorney, law enforcement and the states attorney’s office.

Athletic Director D’Wayne Bates and Principal Deb Nelson have been calling other schools in their conference to see if they received the packages.  Many others have.  Some are being returned to LP while at least two copies have been shredded.

After the meeting, one mother said she was already a worried mom, but that this was giving her goose bumps.

Seat Belt Use Up In Illinois

Posted by wlpo on September 1, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) – Travelers on Illinois roadways are buckling up at higher rates than ever.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced Friday that nearly 94 percent of front-seat passengers were using seat belts as of June. That’s a slight increase from nearly 93 percent a year ago. It’s also above the national average of 84 percent.

Quinn credits new legislation for the increase in seat-belt use. A 2003 Illinois law allows police to pull over drivers solely because of seat-belt violations. The governor’s office says that seat-belt usage has climbed every year since that law was enacted.

Another law that went into effect earlier this year requires that all passengers buckle up, including anyone riding in the back seat.
