Storms Bring Needed Rain But Power Outages And Damage

Posted by wlpo on August 4, 2012

A line of heavy rain, gusty winds and lightning provided a rare storm scene in the Illinois Valley.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was first issued for Bureau and Putnam Counties late this morning.  Around two o’clock, a cold front with storms moved into Bureau County.  Power was knocked out in several parts of Princeton.

The storms moved into the La Salle-Peru area around 2:30, causing Oglesby Fire to sound a tornado siren when someone thought they saw a funnel cloud near Burger King.  Central States Baseball games were also halted in Oglesby when lightning hit the concession stand, damaging an attached bathroom.  No one was hurt.

The storms also knocked AM 1220 WLPO and 99.3 WAJK off the air for several minutes due to a power outage.

Ambulance Controversy Brewing In Oglesby

Posted by wlpo on August 4, 2012

There could be a packed house at Monday night’s Oglesby City Council Meeting.

A Facebook page called “Save Oglesby Ambulance” has been created leading up to a proposed wage ordinance vote by the city council.  According to the Facebook page, the council is thinking about cutting hours for EMT’s and paramedics to a point where they may have to look elsewhere for employment.  In turn, the post claims this could a delayed response to 911 calls.

Besides the ambulance ordinance, the Oglesby City Council Monday night will talk about the number of city liquor licenses available and give a financial report from this year’s Summer Fun Fest.

The meeting starts at 7 inside the Oglesby City Hall.

Skydive Record Broke In Ottawa

Posted by wlpo on August 4, 2012

OTTAWA(AP) – Falling at speeds of up to 220 miles per hour, nearly 140 skydivers have shattered the vertical skydiving world record by flying heads-down in a massive snowflake formation in Ottawa.

Three judges representing the international air sports federation certified that 138 skydivers successfully created the formation Friday during a skydiving festival at Skydive Chicago in Ottawa. It took 15 attempts over three days for the team to successfully break the previous record of 108 skydivers set in 2009.

Following months of planning and tryouts, skydivers from around the world squeezed into six aircraft and launched themselves into the air at 18,500 feet. Four camera operators jumped with the 138 participants to record the 150-foot-wide formation, to prove to the judges that all the jumpers were in their pre-assigned slots.
