Cause of recycling center fire under investigation

Posted by wlpo on July 25, 2012

Dark smoke coming from a fourth story window is never a good sign but it’s what firefighters found at Cimco Recycling in Ottawa.  Reports of a fire at the former Bakelite, Union Carbide plant started coming in before 5:30am Wednesday.

Ottawa Fire Captain William Manley says it appears some type of dense plastic material on the fourth floor was burning.  The roof collapsed causing part of a north wall to come down.  The fire was under control around nine.  Firefighters were back at the station by 1:30pm.

Many area departments provided trucks and tankers.  The cause is being investigated.
