Four Area Bars Get Video Gaming Approval

Four businesses in La Salle County have been approved to get video gaming licenses.

The Illinois Gaming Board has approved video gambling for: Art Giese’s Tavern in Peru; John’s North Star in La Salle; Shaker’s Lounge and The Wedron Office in Ottawa.  When gaming licenses are handed out, these places can have up to five video gambling machines.

Places that are still waiting license approval in La Salle County include: Park View Tap and Illinois Valley Super Bowl in Peru; El Zapare in Mendota; Hank’s Farm Restaurant in Ottawa; Bulldog’s Bar in Oglesby; and Storage’s Bar and Grill in La Salle.

In McNabb, Kathy’s Korner Pub in McNabb is awaiting video gambling approval so is Sock’s Place in Wyanet.

Country Up And Comer Headlining Sandwich Fair

The entertainment schedule has been announced for the 125th annual Sandwich Fair.

The headline music act is country singer Justin Moore. Moore’s had three top 10-country singles on the only two albums he’s released. His #1 hits are “Small Town U.S.A.” and “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away”. Moore takes the Sandwich Fair stage Friday, September 7th.

The fair runs September 5th thru the 9th. There’s also harness racing, demolition derbies, and truck and tractor pulls.

Peru – 38th / Venture Drive changes

If you’ve ever shopped in Peru, you know that traffic easily backs up north of mall. The city is trying something different in hopes of easing congestion. Starting Monday, there will no longer be a stop sign for westbound traffic coming from Route 251. Traffic coming from the mall or from places like Hobby Lobby and Target on Venture Drive will still have to stop and can only turn right. Traffic going eastbound on 38th Street from Peoria Street will still have to stop but can now only go straight or turn right into the mall. A left turn no longer be allowed onto Venture Drive towards Target and Hobby Lobby. Every black Friday Peru Police usually monitor the four-way stop between the mall and Hobby Lobby because traffic backs up so much. Mayor Scott Harl says it will “pose a learning curve for drivers”.

Crosses for Aurora, Colorado

An Illinois man who placed 15 crosses near Columbine High School after the 1999 massacre there has returned to Colorado with 12 crosses for the victims of a theater shooting. Greg Zanis, of Aurora, Ill., began putting up the crosses Sunday on a hill across the street from the theater in Aurora. Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan arrived later, put his hand on a cross and said a prayer with Zanis. Hogan became emotional and embraced his wife. The crosses are white, about 3 1/2 feet tall and made out of lumber. Zanis says he was swamped with requests to bring them. The 15 crosses Zanis erected near Columbine included two for the killers, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. The father of one of the victims tore those two crosses down.

significant donation to Friends of Peru Pool

It’s a small boost the cause…yet significant. Peru Alderwoman, Sherry Mayszak also with Friends of Peru pool said they haven’t counted the money from their Saturday fundraiser, however, Mayszak said a man did donate five hundred dollars in memory of his late wife and son. Mayszak hopes to have a total on the money raised in a few days.

Earlville stabbing

An Earlville trailer park the site of a stabbing Saturday afternoon sending a 38-year old man to Rockford Memorial. The Sheriff’s office responded at 1:25pm and found 38-year old Ramon Gonzalez with injuries. Gonzalez was sent first to Mendota Community then to Rockford. Earlville police, State Police Crime Scene services and the sheriff’s office continue their investigation.

Movie shooting – Illinois man

Navy officials say one of the people killed in a Colorado movie theater shooting was a veteran of the service. Lieutenant Commander Chris Servello says 26-year-old Jonathan Blunk of Aurora, Colorado was killed at the midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” on Friday. Military officials have also identified 27-year-old Navy sailor John Larimer of Crystal Lake, Illinois as one of the 12 victims.

Trailer Park stabbing

Sounds reminscent of an earlier attack months ago. But, this time, the attack occurred in an Earlville trailer park with LaSalle County Sheriff’s offce responding about 1:25pm Saturday. The Sheriff’s office says 28-year old Ramon Gonzalez of Sandwich was taken by ambulance to Mendota Community Hospital and later to Rockford Memorial for treatment of a stab wound. Earlville police, State Police Crime Scene services and the Sheriff’s office are continuing their investigation

Hate crime charge

Charges of aggravated battery and hate crime levied against a LaSalle man following a disturbance at a rural Marseilles campground. Ronnie Martin was arrested about 10:45pm Saturday at “4-star campground” by LaSalle County Sheriff’s office. His victim, a black male was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa for treatment of his injuries. Martin was taken to the county jail to await a bond hearing.

Truck gets river bath

A peru man’s truck and trailer got a bath in the Illinois River about 10:35pm Saturday night. Peru police say the fire department dive team and two tow trucks were required to pull truck and trailer from the river at the Peru Boat Launch. Police say a winch strap broke allowing everything to roll back into the river. The recovery job took about four hours. Peru police would not release the name of the owner.
