Bishop leads ceremony for Mission Cemetery remains

Posted by wlpo on June 22, 2012

More than a century after their deaths, the immigrants originally buried in the old cemetery in La Salle had their remains placed in St. Vincent Cemetery in La Salle.

Bishop Daniel Jenky of the Peoria Catholic Diocese led the service Friday afternoon.   He told the crowd that we are all the spiritual descendents of the people being re-intermened.

About 30-40 people attended, some of them had volunteered last year to remove the remains from the old cemetery.  The area that was the cemetery is the site of a new veterinary clinic.

The sewage plant usually isn’t the focal point of community pride but it’s still important.  Ottawa recently put $9 million into upgrading their sewage plant to meet environmental standards and to run more efficiently.  And they’d like to show it off.

You can see the inner working of the plant during an open house from 10am-1pm Saturday.  They’ll be giving tours.  You can get to the plant on Pontiac Lane by going just west of the rail crossing on Hitt Street.
