Departments called to barn fire in La Salle

Posted by wlpo on April 6, 2012

You see old, dilapidated barns spotting the La Salle County countryside.  It was one like that that was on fire Friday in rural La Salle.  La Salle Firefighters were called to it just after noon.  Actually two barns were on fire, why is unclear.

You could see dark smoke coming from just east of Interstate 39.  Embers from the fire started a grass fire not far away.

Peru, Oglesby and Utica fire departments provided tankers and men.  Firefighters were there for a little more than three hours.

I-39 Wrong Way Driver Is Finally Identified

Posted by wlpo on April 6, 2012

Nearly a week after he drove into oncoming traffic and died, an Ohio man’s name has finally been made public.

The La Salle County Coroner says it was 85 year old Richard Craft who died on the scene of a crash last Friday night on Interstate 39 just north of Interstate 80.  Troopers say Craft was driving north in south lanes of traffic for over ten miles before he hit two carloads of spring breakers on their way from Minnesota to Florida.  Three of the students are still in the hospital.

John Anderson of Wisconsin is in critical condition while Jacob Klem and Adyn Clausen of Minnesota are in fair condition at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Sexual Assault Vigil Planned In Princeton

Posted by wlpo on April 6, 2012

Sexual assault of women continues to be a problem and several area leaders are trying to do something about it.

Members of Freedom House, Bureau County State’s Attorney’s Office, Princeton Police and Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living are having a “Take Back the Night” vigil Thursday at 6 inside Soldiers and Sailors Park in Princeton.  Stephanie Cartwright with Freedom House says she hopes the night brings to light that women with disabilities are four times more likely to have been sexually assaulted in the last year than women without a disability.

The moving Clothesline Project will be on display Thursday.  It has t-shirts hanging that are designed by survivors of domestic or sexual violence who use art therapy to recover.

Trial Delayed For Alleged La Salle Purse Snatcher

Posted by wlpo on April 6, 2012

The mindset of an alleged purse snatcher in La Salle will be tested before any kind of trial happens.

In court yesterday, Judge Cynthia Raccuglia agreed to appoint a doctor to examine Christopher Coleman’s mental condition at the time he’s accused of strong-arming purses away from women leaving bars in La Salle. He was originally supposed to go to trial Monday.

After keeping a close eye on Coleman, La Salle Police arrested him in late November for stealing purses from women leaving Jake’s Pour House and The Dugout.  He had just been released from prison.
