State Senator says public hearings would have to be held before any state closurers

Posted by wlpo on February 22, 2012

The women’s prison in Dwight and the supermax prison in Tamms are among the 14 places Governor Pat Quinn says he wants to close.  The Democrat outlined the closings and cuts to Medicaid during his budget address Wednesday.

Republican State Senator Sue Rezin has a lot of people that work at those places living in her district.  She says public hearings would have to be held before anything is closed.  Rezin believes some of the proposals could be worked out in the budget process.

The governor has proposed forming a panel to tackle the pension problem.  Rezin blames the problem on years of over-spending by lawmakers.
