Blagojevich Says Happy New Year

Posted by wlpo on January 3, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) – The new year is likely to be anything but a happy one for Rod Blagojevich.

But the prison-bound former governor has posted a message via his Twitter account and Facebook page wishing any supporters a happy 2012. The 55-year-old added that “these are dark and extremely challenging times” for him, his wife and two daughters.

Blagojevich said his lawyers are working on an appeal. And he said that – despite his legal troubles – he and his family continued “to look to the New Year with hope.”

After a long Monday, fire fighters clear the Westclox fire scene

Posted by wlpo on January 3, 2012

The smell of burning plastic hangs over the Illinois Valley but it seems the fight against the fire at the former Westclox building in Peru has been won.

Firefighters cleared the scene Monday night after crews from across the area spent most of the day dousing what was still burning in the middle building.  A recycling center filled with plastic and carpet had used that space.

Lights were brought in to help crews work into the darkness, illuminating the white smoke.  Fire Chief Jeff King is expected to be back at the fire station bright and early Tuesday.

A 15 year old boy from Peru accused with another teen of starting the fire is scheduled to be in juvenile court Tuesday.
