State Cracking Down On Tossed Electronics

Posted by wlpo on December 11, 2011

Replacing your TV or computer this Christmas? Because of a law taking effect January 1st, you won’t just be able to throw old electronics out with your trash.

If you sit out a TV, computer or other electronics, La Salle County Environmental Services Director Mike Harsted says your garbage provider will leave a note saying they can’t pick it up and give you a number for a recycling company. As of January 1st, landfills can’t take electronics since the state’s worried about toxic chemicals from the electronics getting into groundwater.

Harsted says he’s busy working with cities and area garbage companies to set up electronic pickups next year. He says the county will do five, one-day pickups next summer.

The closest electronics recycling companies are in Dixon, Pontiac and Romeoville.
