La Salle County makes top 10 for counties with deer crashes

Posted by wlpo on October 25, 2011

Your brights are on and you’re on the defensive, scanning the road ahead for deer.  You see one but only hear the other as you’re clipping it with your car.

Deer are part of the driving experience in Illinois.  New numbers from the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources show fewer people hit deer last year then in previous years.  They’re hoping those numbers stay down.

La Salle County ranked sixth in the state for counties with the most deer accidents, totaling 364.

Most of the crashes happened on rural roads and more than half were at night.  And while most of the crashes ended with only the deer killed, 10 people died after crashes involving deer last year.
