Sheriff: Solid leads in effort to ID Gacy vicitms

Posted by wlpo on October 17, 2011

CHICAGO (AP) – Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says his office has received promising leads in the effort to identify eight victims of serial killer John Wayne Gacy.

Dart announced last week that detectives had exhumed the remains of the eight unidentified victims for DNA testing. The sheriff hopes people whose loved ones disappeared in the 1970s when Gacy killed 33 young men and boys will undergo saliva tests to compare their DNA with DNA recovered from the victims’ bones.

Dart said Monday that about 70 families who fit the profile of Gacy’s known victims – young, white males who lived or worked in the Chicago area – have come forward. He says DNA tests have been conducted on families of two young men, which have been sent to a lab in Texas.
