La Salle approves changes for on-call firefighters and EMS

Posted by wlpo on October 17, 2011

Why can’t a person who lives out of town but works in town be a volunteer firefighter in La Salle?  The La Salle Fire Chief thinks they should and the city council has agreed with him.

Allowing paid-on call firefighters live outside of town is one of several changes the city council approved Monday night.  Chief Andy Bacidore says they have enough people to cover their calls but he wants to make sure they aren’t passing up talented people do to the restriction.  He says people from La Salle will be considered first.

Another change is to pay paid-on call EMS $24 per day on the weekends so they’ll be close by if they’re needed.  A step has also been removed from the hiring processes.  Instead of needing city council approval, a new paid-on call firefighter or EMS will only need the approval of the chief, mayor and head of the committee.
