Relay for Life raises more than $247,000

More than $247,000was raised at the Relay for Life of La Salle County. The event Friday night at Streator High School featured 58 teams.   The money will go to the American Cancer Society.

Push To Open Illini State Park Campgrounds

If Senator Sue Rezin has her way, campgrounds at Illini State Park will be open for the July 4th weekend.

Rezin told city officials that the reopening of the campgrounds has been put on emergency status which should speed up the repairs.  The campgrounds closed in early May due to a problem with the wastewater treatment system.  The DNR said the campgrounds would open this month but eventually pushed the opening back until July 18th.

The Great Falls Campground, Whitetail Campground and concession stand are all closed at Illini State Park.

IV Youth Soccer League to donate to pool fund

Updating the flood plain ordinance is one of the topics that could be discussed when the Peru City Council meets Monday night.  They could also award a bid for drainage repair work.

They’re also expecting a visit by representatives of the Illinois Valley Youth Soccer League which is donating one thousand dollars to the Peru Pool Fund.

The Peru City Council meets at 7:30pm Monday.

Crash on I-80 injures five people

A crash involving a pickup truck and semi truck sent five people to area hospitals while snarling traffic on Interstate 80.  The accident happened around 6am Sunday near Utica.

Utica Fire Chief Gary Gbur says the first reports were that several people were entrapped in the pickup truck which had rolled over and crashed with the semi.

Crews removed five people from the pickup.  Two were taken to Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru while three others were taken to Ottawa Regional Hospital.  Their names and conditions have not been made available yet.

Both eastbound lanes were closed for a couple of hours.

Conservation award

A Farm Journal award winner from Grand Ridge will be receiving a local honor in late July. John Thomas of Grand Ridge will receive the LaSalle County Conservation Farm Family of the Year award at the district’s summer picnic. Over thirty years, Thomas rotates mostly corn and soybeans and utilizes waterways, sediment control basins, habitat buffers, food plots and no-till planting in five townships. The Grand Ridge man, who raises cattle, was recognized by Farm Journal in 2009 for a twin row corn planter he built. His late wife, Sheila was a 4-H coordinator in LaSalle County. Thomas will receive the LaSalle County Conservation District award at Mendota High School July 28th.

Employers breakfast

Changes are coming fast at the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission and the Streator Chamber of Commerce is inviting business leaders to learn about them this Wednesday. Kevin Luther of Heyl, Royster, Voelker and Allen will spotlight “hot issues and changes” and offer solutions to employers. The breakfast program is at 7:30am Wednesday in St. Mary’s Hospital North Assembly Hall. Cost is five dollars. Call the Chamber office to make reservations.

McNabb boil order

A boil order is now in effect for the entire village of McNabb. Joe Glynn of TEST said a motor was being replaced around 9:30am Sunday. The motor powers the pump in the town’s only well. If the town passes two consecutive days of water testing…the boil order will be cancelled.

Railroad Days wraps up today in Mendota. Hours 10 – 4. Look inside retired railroad cars and see model trains inside the Union Depot Railroad Museum. The “More on 34” garage sales continue along Route 34 from Galesburg to Aurora including Mendota and Earlville. Also, Peru Municipal Band will entertain at 2pm on the east side of Liberty Village.

Deadly weekend on roads

Three teens were killed and a fourth was injured when the stolen car they were in slammed into a tree northwest of Chicago. Prospect Heights police Cmdr. Eric Lundt says the car was traveling at a high rate of speed with it jumped the curb, clipped one tree and crashed into a second early Saturday. It’s been deadly on the roads this weekend in our area. A crash in Lee County Friday killed three persons in a car after a driver in a semi failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the side of the car. Also Friday, the driver of a motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on Route 52 near Newark then was struck by a car in the opposite lane. The driver of the motorcycle later died at St Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
