1946 tornado remembered

Posted by wlpo on June 12, 2011

Augie Wilke remembers exactly what he was doing when a violent tornado hit his hometown of Peru in 1946. Wilke was 16 years old and out riding ponies when the storm swept into town 65 years ago Sunday. He tells the News-Tribune that trees were flying by him as he tried to herd his pony into a friend’s garage. He and the others made it to safety, but seven other residents weren’t so lucky and were injured. Wilke says a 26-year-old who survived World War II without being injured was hurt so badly by the storm that he limped for the rest of his life. Homes across town were also damaged, and Wilke says roofs were “landing everywhere.”

Thermostat argument

Posted by wlpo on June 12, 2011

PLAINFIELD, Ill. (AP) – A battle with her sister over a thermostat has landed a Plainfield woman in hot water. According to a report Sunday in The Chicago Tribune, 62-year-old Ilona Sales is charged with misdemeanor battery after alleging punching her sister, Wanda Lupina, when Lupina turned down the heat in their home. A court date for Sales was set for Monday in Joliet. Sales claims Lupina started the fight and left her bruised. And Sales in turn has filed a civil lawsuit over their legally shared home. Sales moved in with Lupina a couple of years ago and helped pay off her mortgage after selling her Arizona home. Now Sales wants a judge to order Lupina to return her money, even if that means selling the house.

Ottawa Regional new campaign

Posted by wlpo on June 12, 2011

In response to LaSalle County’s recent poor health ranking, Ottawa Regional Hospital is formulating a campaign urging the public to make positive lifestyle changes. Out of Illinois’s 102 counties, La Salle County ranked 94th for health behavior including drinking and smoking and 75th for death prior to age 75. Karen Brodbeck is director of marketing for Ottawa Regional. Brodbeck says the survey results could mean a lack of motivation to make good health a priority or a lack of understanding about the resources available to do so. The hospital is launching a month long campaign to get persons to consider their overall healthcare needs before illness or injuries. The hospital will convey this message with three different print ads and one radio and billboard ad thru June 30.

Posted by wlpo on June 12, 2011

Illinois lawmakers are looking at ways to shrink a recently approved gambling expansion bill in order to avoid a veto from Governor Pat Quinn. The measure sent to the governor last month would add five casinos in central and northern Illinois – including one in Chicago – and expand existing ones.
