Peru alderman suggests ending the city’s ESDA service

Posted by wlpo on June 6, 2011

When the police and fire departments in Peru need an extra hand directing traffic or handling crowds they call their ESDA members.  The group consists of a director and a couple of volunteers.  They also are weather spotters during severe weather.  For the past several years it has cost the city at least $7,000 annually.

Alderman Rodney Perez is on the Public Health and Safety Committee.  He’s also a Peru Firefighter.  He’s suggesting the city do away with ESDA and shift those responsibilities to the fire department as a way of saving money.  He put the idea before the city council Monday night.  He says that’s how they do it in La Salle.

Not everyone is convinced it will cut expenses.  Alderman Dave Potthoff says he’s open-minded but wants to see more numbers.  He doesn’t know how that wouldn’t create more overtime hours for the police and fire.

Alderman Bob Ankiewicz thinks it’s a bad idea.  The council will take a closer look at the numbers when they meet next week.

The city of Oglesby could be taking a homeowner back to court for his rundown property.

City Attorney Jim Andreoni gave the police chief the go ahead to ticket Gary Balzarini again for his home on 354 E. Florence Street.  Balzarini was sent a letter May 6th giving him a list of improvements that were needed to avoid further fines and court action.  The city already collected 500 dollars in fines from Balzarini last year.

Finley says they’ve been fighting with Balzarini since 2008 and the neighbors aren’t happy with the eye sore.

Protect yourself from heat related illnesses

Posted by wlpo on June 6, 2011

Don’t take hot weather for granted, that’s the advice of nurse practitioner Lisa Ilg at Fast Care in Peru.  She says heat related illnesses are serious but preventable.

She suggests you exercise early in the morning or after six in the evening.  You should also check with your doctor before taking salt tablets.  And if you can, stay inside where it is cool.

Heat related illnesses include heat cramps that often occur in the legs, arms and abdomen.  If you experience that, Ilg suggests you stop what you’re doing, go to a cooler area and sip water.

More severe are heat exhaustion and heat stroke.  Ilg says heat stroke is a medical emergency.  Signs to watch for include red hot skin, rapid pulse, a throbbing headache and dizziness.  Someone should call 911 and get the over heated person to a cool area.

Blago: Emanuel raised issue of congressional seat

Posted by wlpo on June 6, 2011

CHICAGO (AP) – Rod Blagojevich says Rahm Emanuel raised the issue of having then-Gov. Blagojevich appoint a successor to Emanuel’s congressional seat in 2008 when Emanuel became White House chief of staff.

Blagojevich says his staff told him the move would be unconstitutional. Normally, a special election is held for a congressional vacancy.

Blagojevich is testifying for a sixth day at his corruption retrial.

Prosecutor Reid Schar introduced the issue of the congressional seat. He asked whether Emanuel had approached Blagojevich about making an appointment. Blagojevich agreed the purpose would be to give the appointee an advantage in a special election.

Blagojevich said he was told by his lawyers and political consultant that such an appointment would be unconstitutional.

A spokesperson for Emanuel, now Chicago’s mayor, could not immediately be reached for comment.
