Ill. lawmakers: Buckle up in back Seat

Posted by wlpo on May 28, 2011

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – Illinois lawmakers want tougher rules for using safety belts.

They’ve approved legislation that would require passengers in the back seats of cars and trucks to wear seat-belts.

The new requirement was approved by the Illinois Senate 30-23 Friday evening. It had already passed the House, so now it goes to the governor.

Some lawmakers consider it unnecessary government intrusion.

Senate President John Cullerton said a vote for back seat safety belts was a vote for saving lives.

In Illinois, 38 back seat passengers not wearing seatbelts died in 2009.
