Ill. Senate divided along party lines during budget Debate

Posted by wlpo on May 13, 2011

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – Republicans and Democrats worked together on a new state budget in the Illinois House, but it was a different picture in the state Senate.

Senators divided along party lines and traded accusations Friday as they passed a spending plan drafted by Democrats.

Republicans accused the majority party of not cutting enough. They also complained that the budget legislation was unveiled at the last minute, leaving no time to examine it closely.

But Democrats say the GOP has refused to take part in the budget process. They say Republicans could have introduced legislation to cut spending but chose not to.

The budget approved today would about $1 billion more than the version passed with bipartisan support in the House. Now lawmakers will have to find a version both chambers can support.
