Blagojevich Jury Won’t Be Picked This Week

Posted by wlpo on April 28, 2011

CHICAGO (AP) – The judge in the retrial of  Rod Blagojevich says he doesn’t expect to have a jury in place until next week as jury selection drags on longer than expected.

U.S. District Judge James Zagel resumed questioning jurors Thursday. After questioning, he and attorneys will decide who should stay and who should go.

As part of that process, attorneys on both sides get so-called preemptory challenges in which they strike jurors without having to give a reason. Prosecutors get nine challenges and defense attorneys get 13. Zagel told attorneys they can exercise their preemptory challenges on Monday.

Jury selection has stretched on for longer than expected because so many potential panelists had heard about Blagojevich’s high-profile first trial.
