Weddings can get expensive but an area couple has a few extra hundred dollars to spend after winning at the 31st annual Illinois Valley Bridal Show.
Jaci Haag of Streator and William Packard won $500to spend on services for the wedding they’re planning for November 2012.
The Illinois Valley Bridal Show was presented Sunday by AM 1220 WLPO, 99.3 WAJK and 96.5 The Wolf.

A bill to abolish the death penalty has been sitting on the Governor’s desk for two weeks now. After the bill was passed to him, Governor Quinn said he would reflect on the measure and seek input before taking action. LaSalle County States Attorney Brian Towne favors keeping this ultimate in punishments because it can’t be determined just how many persons were deterred from committing a heinous crime because of the death penalty. Many opponents to capital punhishment are only worried about the cost. Towne is a vice-president of the Illinois States Attorney’s Association who has sent its message to the Governor. In the past, Governor Quinn has stated he believes, in principle, in the death penalty.

Winter weather could make getting around difficult this week. The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard watch from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon. They’re predicting that heavy snow will make driving dangerous.
Snow is predicted to start Monday afternoon and continue through Wednesday. Daily highs are also expected to go from the 20’s on Monday and Tuesday to only single digits by Thursday.

You can donate blood at the Illinois Valley Red Cross for a few more Mondays before a scheduling change. Starting the last full week in February, I-V Red Cross’s bloodmobiles will be on Tuesdays. Hours will remain 1 – 5pm and on the fifth Tuesday – 2 – 6pm. Severe winter weather in the Eastern U.S. has cancelled 15,600 blood and platelet donations. The Red Cross is asking for donations from elsewhere to make up for the shortfall. All blood types, especially Type “O negative” are needed. Individuals at least 17 years old weighing at least 110 pounds and in good health are needed. The Illinois Valley Red Cross is at 1530 Fourth Street in Peru.

Local musicians are banding together to help one of their own. A benefit is planned January 30th at Primetime Tap in Oglesby for Mark Piecha of Streator. Piecha remains in ICU at St. Francis Hospital after a crash last Tuesday near Grand Ridge. Local singers Chris Farrell, Brian Neumann, Jimmy Essl and Joey Figgiani will perform at the benefit for Piecha who is also a local singer. Proceeds from the show will go to the Piecha family for medical expenses. Tickets are 20 dollars which includes food, beer, soda and the live music.

If you’re planning a wedding, you could a feel for what’s popular at the 31st Annual Illinois Valley Bridal Show. You’ll be able to meet with photographers, music services and see some of the popular dress styles modeled. It’s at the Mendota Civic Center. Doors open at 11am. The Style show is at 2pm. Admission is free. It’s presented by AM 1220 WLPO, 99-3 WAJK and 96-5 The Wolf.
