The country’s blood shortage

Posted by wlpo on January 16, 2011

What does one or two days of severe winter weather do to your life? For the Red Cross, it can and has impacted blood product availability – especially in the Midwest, South and Eastern U.S. The Red Cross states all blood types are needed – particularly Type O negative and platelets. Type O negative blood is what’s used in an emergency when the patient’s blood type isn’t known. Red Cross’s national network can send blood and platelets from where they are to where they are needed – after local demand is satisfied. Individuals as young as 17, weighing at least 110 pounds and in general good health can donate blood Monday, February 17, 1 – 5pm at the Red Cross on fourth street in Peru. The week of January 10th saw six blood drives cancelled in Nebraska and eleven in Georgia.
