Flu Cases Picking Up

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – Illinois health officials are reporting an increase in flu activity. Many regions in the state are
reporting recent lab-confirmed influenza.

Flu is still not widespread in Illinois, but it’s typical to see a peak in illness in January and February. Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon Arnold encourages everyone 6 months and older to get vaccinated to protect
themselves and others.

IVCH Has New Doctor

The newest doctor at Illinois Valley Community Hospital is no stranger to the area.

Dr. Michelle Vasquez starts seeing patients Monday at the IVCH West Street office building.  She’s a family practitioner who will also deliver babies.

Vasquez grew up in Peru and was once a phlebotomist in the IVCH laboratory.

Pot Bust Near Utica

A New Yorker is accused of hauling marijuana through the Illinois Valley.

Santo Palmieri was pulled over Thursday by state police on I-80 near Utica for allegedly following too closely.  After a drug dog search, troopers say they found two duffel bags full of marijuana in Palmieri’s truck.  The total weight of the alleged marijuana is 56 pounds.

Palmieri was arrested for possession of cannabis with the intent to deliver.  He was taken to the county jail.
