Illinois Sept. jobless rate falls below 10%

Posted by wlpo on October 21, 2010

CHICAGO (AP) – Illinois’ unemployment rate has fallen below 10% for the first time since April 2009.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security on Thursday said the state’s September jobless rate was 9.9%.

That’s down from 10.1% in August and marks the sixth consecutive month that the rate has fallen.

Unemployment peaked at 11.5% in March of this year, when almost 765,000 workers were unemployed.

There were almost 660,000 without work in September, although Illinois gained more than 8,600 jobs.

IDES Director Maureen O’Donnell says the trend “shows Illinois is moving forward.” Nationally, the unemployment rate for September was 9.6%, unchanged from August.
