Area Inmate’s Death Ruled Accidental

Posted by wlpo on October 5, 2010

An inmate found unresponsive recently in the Grundy County Jail died of asphyxiation.  That’s according to Grundy County Coroner John Callahan.

Callahan says Robert Awalt was found in his cell September 20th.  He died hours later at Morris Community Hospital.  Callahan says Awalt had a swallowed a sock that cut off his oxygen flow.  Awalt apparently had a history of seizures and Callahan says it’s not unheard of for people with seizures to put objects in their mouth.

Awalt’s death has been ruled accidental.  Callahan says a history of alcoholism also played a role in the inmates’ death.
