Peru Not Raising Sales Tax

Posted by wlpo on September 13, 2010

After a lot of talk, the Peru City Council decided Monday night not to raise its sales tax.

Despite Treasurer Gary Hylla saying money is needed in several different areas, no alderman was willing to make a motion to raise Peru’s sales tax.  Alderman Dave Potthoff said increasing the sales tax would have people buying even less, maybe even turning more to internet shopping.  Alderman Dave Waldorf says he would be more in favor of a sales tax increase if it was specifically meant for streets or a swimming pool.

Hylla told the council that they eventually have to do something, saying revenue from an increased sales tax would be just enough to balance the general fund.  He told the council that even if they freeze expenses they won’t have enough money for infrastructure improvements this year or next.

Alderman Bob Ankiewicz said for now the city should just “tighten its belt a little more” while fellow Alderman Jamey Mertel said the city is paying its bills fine with current revenue.
