Flood Anniversary For Central School

Posted by wlpo on September 13, 2010

Two years ago this week floodwaters from the Illinois River overtook Central Elementary School.

A lot has happened since the record flooding.  Students that would’ve attended the old Central school building have attended class at other schools in the district, inside a church and now in an old Wal-Mart building.  The flooded out Central school building has been condemned and likely won’t ever be used as a school ever again because of mold and other issues.

With ground to be broken tomorrow on a new school built on much higher ground, Elementary Schools Superintendent Craig Doster reflects on the sometimes perilous journey.

The old Central school property is still in the hands of the Ottawa Elementary School District.  Doster says the potential sale of the property has been put on the backburner as they focus on getting the new school built.

The city of Ottawa has expressed interest before in buying the riverfront property.
