Bureau County Voters Will Decide Fate Of Jail And Coroner

Posted by wlpo on September 7, 2010

While there are no countywide referendums for La Salle County in November, there are two in Bureau County.

After the dust settled Friday which was the deadline to file referendum proposals for the November 2nd election, Bureau County voters are left with decisions on their county jail and county coroner.

The jail question asks whether or not to issue general obligation bonds not to exceed 15 million dollars for a brand new jail.  The referendum also asks if voters want to levy an additional maximum tax rate of 27.5 cents per every 100 dollars equalized assessed valuation of property to pay off the bonds in 20 years.

In regards to the county coroner, voters will be asked to decide if the coroner is elected or appointed.  Currently the coroner is appointed by the county board.  If voters choose to have the coroner elected, a four-year term would start in 2012.
