Peru needs to repair two wells

Posted by wlpo on August 25, 2010

Turn on your tap water in Peru and the water should be flowing even though two of the city’s nine wells are down.

Fixing the wells won’t be cheap.  It’s estimated to cost between $107,000 and $116,000 to pull and replace one pump.

At another well, it’s unclear how much it will total since they’re not sure what needs to be repaired.  Just pulling the pump out could cost up to $10,000.

One well is on the south side of town and the other on the north side.  They’re hoping to have them back online as soon as possible.

Expanded children’s hours at Peru Public Library

Posted by wlpo on August 25, 2010

In Peru, homeowners are paying more taxes towards the public library.  A tax levy increase last spring gave the library a $379,000 funding increase.

Mary Jean Hauger is the library Director.  She says they’re using the extra money to expand the hours the Children’s Room is open.

The area for kids has traditionally been open fewer hours than the rest of the library.  The children’s room is in the lower level and requires an extra person to be on duty.

Hauger says they’re trying to meet guidelines that would make it more likely they could receive state grants.

She says because of the extra tax dollars, they’re able to qualify for state money for new automatic doors and improved ramps and concrete near the lower level entrance.
