Alderman questions enterprise zone fee

Posted by wlpo on July 28, 2010

Companies that locate in an enterprise zone are charged an administrative fee and this has at least one Peru Alderman wondering why.

Taking advantage of an expected visit from a couple of Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce representatives at the Peru City Council meeting Wednesday night, Dave Potthoff asked IVAC Executive Director Barb Koch why they charge a fee. Potthoff says he finds the fee to be counter productive.

IVAC is the zone administrator for an enterprise zone including Peru, La Salle, Utica, Oglesby and La Salle County.  Koch says it’s to cover the cost and expenses of what they do and paperwork.  She’s the fee structure changed in 2007 and a group comprised of affected mayors and the La Salle County Board Chairman is seriously discussing another revision.  Other enterprise zones apparently charge a lower fee.
