Storms Wreak Havoc in Bureau and La Salle Counties

If you’re waiting for you power to come back on, Ameren says it should be restored by the end of Saturday.

A storm packing strong winds swept through the region late yesterday afternoon taking out trees and ultimately power lines in Bureau and La Salle Counties.

Many people in western Bureau County and the Ottawa and Marseilles area remain without service.

Ameren says in the La Salle area, the majority of customers are expected to have their service restored by 8p.m., with the remainder restored by midnight.

Enrollment Update For IVCC-Ottawa Center

Enrollment keeps rising at the new IVCC-Ottawa Center.

College President Jerry Corcoran told the college trustees last night that the Ottawa Center enrollment is at 353, or 70 percent capacity.  Corcoran says 107 of these students have never taken courses at IVCC.  The new building in Ottawa is set for grand opening Monday, August 9th.

Walk-in registration is at Ottawa City Hall from 8 until 4:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays and from 11 until 7 on Tuesdays for the Ottawa campus.

Nuclear Plant Leak Is Fixed

Repairs are finished to an above-ground water storage tank what was leaking at the Exelon Nuclear plant in La Salle County.

Plant Vice-President Dave Wozniak says his employees took proper action to stop the leak and safely repair the tank.  He added there was never a threat to the public or employees themselves.

The tritium leak was discovered June 30th and was stopped after the affected tank was drained July 5th.  Company officials say there’s no indication the tritium left the station property.

Tritium is a form of hydrogen that produces a weak radiation level.

Mom and son arrested after police called to Tonica home

Trouble at a home in Tonica left a mother and son facing charges.  Both are accused of pushing sheriff’s deputies that were called to the home early Thursday morning.

Dallas Freeman and his mother Jodi Gibson were arrested for aggravated battery to a peace officer and resisting arrest.  Police say Freeman also broke out a back window of a squad car was charged with criminal damage to government property.  Both were taken to the La Salle County Jail.

Summer Fun comes to Oglesby

Bicycling and bocce ball are some of the activities included in Oglesby’s Summerfest.

Saturday includes a kiddie parade at 10am on Dale Avenue.  Line-up is at 9:30.  There will be bike and helmet safety checks and a bike rodeo at Dickinson House.

There will be a big bike ride starting at the Dickinson House parking lot noon.  The ride is about three miles long.

At 1pm, there’s a bocce ball tournament in LeHigh Park hosted by the Northern Illinois Bocce League.  Registration is at noon.

There’s a party in the park from 3pm until 5pm featuring a magic show.  You can swim for free at the pool from 6pm until 8pm.

The night concludes with food, drinks and music at LeHigh Park.
