Health claims denials

An Illinois law that went into effect July 1 grants consumers the right to an external independent review of the denied health insurance claims. The Illinois Department of Insurance issued a reminder about the law Friday. In the past, only patients in health maintenance organizations had the right to such reviews. The new law extends the protection to people covered by other types of plans. Consumers can request an external review within four months of getting notice that their insurer has denied a claim or treatment request.

Mendota Chamber recycling

The offices of the Mendota Chamber of Commerce offers a solution to the question of what to do with old print cartridges and cell phones. The office at 800 Washington Street has a box to hold old cell phones, inkjet and laser cartridges. The Chamber’s Allison Wasmer says donations will be properly recycled and the service is available to the entire community.

Cherry Mine exhibit at IVCC

An exhibit documenting the Cherry Mine Disaster is coming to Illinois Valley Community College.

“The Flames Caught Us: Cherry Mine 1909”, opens at IVCC on Monday, July 12th. The mine disaster was showcased at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield from November through this past March. The exhibit features several photos and letters documenting the disaster which killed over 200 miners.

The exhibit will be on display in the lower level of Building E at IVCC from 8am-9pm Monday thru Thursday. It’ll stay at IVCC through October

breaking gifts at Grand Bear

Wedding guests misbehaving – not that new, but add the police – that’s taking it to a new level. 27-year old Jaime Scholz of Chicago reportedly caused a disturbance about midnight in Grand Bear Lodge at Utica. Scholz was taken to LaSalle County jail Sunday on charges of battery, domestic battery and criminal damage to property. Police say she broke some wedding gifts. She’ll have a hearing Sunday.
