Three years after killings, Mackowiak awaits trial

Posted by wlpo on July 10, 2010

Sunday marks three full years that 42 year old Keith Mackowiak of Seneca has been for allegedly killing an elderly couple from Seneca.

Mackowiak was arrested in the late afternoon of Wednesday, July 11th after the bodies of Al and Katherine Twardowski were found face down in their rural Seneca home that morning.  Investigators think Mackowiak intended to burglarize the couple but it went wrong and he beat them to death with a shovel.

Mackowiak’s double-murder trial has seen several delays and most recently saw Mackowiak fire his public defenders and try to represent himself.  He is using a paralegal to build his case at taxpayer’s expense.

While in court last week, Mackowiak thought it would take the rest of the year for him to be ready for trial.

Several family members of the Twardowski’s show up to each court appearance by Mackowiak.

He’s the only accused murderer awaiting trial in La Salle County.
