Township given permission to mine gravel for roads

Posted by wlpo on July 8, 2010

Roads in Serena Township in La Salle County will now be made out of materials from Serena Township.

The La Salle County Board granted a special use permit Thursday to the Serena Township Road District to begin mining on farmland about a mile south of Serena.  The township plans to mine gravel and use it solely on their roads.  They believe they’ll save money by not having to purchase the gravel elsewhere.

The 28 acres of land currently is farmed by the township but is considered to be low productivity farm ground.   The township still needs a DNR permit.
