Veteran’s memorial unveiled in Peru

Posted by wlpo on July 3, 2010

A black granite monument stands in Veteran’s Park in Peru as a tribute to the people who have served the United States in the armed forces.

A group of veterans unveiled the monument during a dedication ceremony Saturday morning.  It was part of the city’s 175th anniversary.

Jim Vaughn talked about the effort by the Peru VFW and Peru Rotary to make the monument a reality.

Planning for the monument began in 2001, but it fell out of focus a year or so later.  Efforts were renewed last winter.

The ceremony featured comments from US Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson, State Senator Gary Dahl, and State Representative Frank Mautino along with Peru Mayor Scott Harl and past mayor Donald Baker.

The ceremony was followed by a parade and events at Centennial Park.

More people using La Salle swimming pool this summer

Posted by wlpo on July 3, 2010

A cheap way to beat the heat is a dip at the city swimming pool.  It would seem that more families are spending time at the La Salle Pool.

Danielle Newell is the pool manager.  She says they’ve been seeing an increase in the number of swimmers, with 400 to 500 people entering on a good day.  She estimates that’s about 100 more people per day than last summer.

She assumes the closing of the Peru pool is probably a factor.  And June was a particularly hot month.

The La Salle Pool is open from noon until five on weekends and from noon until seven on weekdays.  Adult swim is from 11 until noon.  Admission is $1.25.
