Census jobs helped area employment numbers

Posted by wlpo on June 25, 2010

Finding a job might have gotten a little easier in May.  Area unemployment rates dropped from April to May.  But more people were still filing for unemployment last month when compared to the same time last year.

May unemployment for LaSalle County was 12.2%, Bureau County unemployment was 9.6%, and Putnam County unemployment was 10.5%.      It was 11.6% for the Ottawa-Streator area.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security says most of the new hires were temporary Census2010 positions.  Fields like manufacturing and retail actually lost jobs.
