Insurance policy dispute could become unfair labor practice complaint

Posted by wlpo on June 23, 2010

An unfair labor practice complaint is likely to be filed against the teacher’s union in the La Salle Elementary School District.

Superintendent Dan Marenda says he’s already been in contact with the district’s attorneys.

The complaint stems from a dispute over the teachers’ health insurance policy.  A joint insurance committee made up of district officials and La Salle Education Association officials reached a stalemate when voting on a new insurance policy earlier this month.

Marenda says the union hasn’t said why they’re against the policy change which was recommended by a consultant and would save the district $307,000.

Since then, Marenda says he’s sent the LEA a memo requesting mediation and was told by a union spokeswoman that the LEA considers the matter closed.  Marenda says he’ll tell that to their attorneys as they consider the unfair labor practice complaint.  He thinks the union is breaking their contract by not working on the insurance issue.

LEA officials were at Tuesday night’s school board meeting but did not comment.
