Trial Delayed For Accused Arsonist

Posted by wlpo on June 4, 2010

A woman accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a church and setting a house on fire in Ottawa has had her mental state examined but the results aren’t in yet.

Because of that, Judge H. Chris Ryan set a new status hearing for next Friday morning for 42 year old Terri James of Ottawa.  Her trial date of Monday has been scratched.

The defense is wondering if she’s mentally fit to stand trial for arson and theft.  Public Defender Tim Cappellini says the mental tests are in the mail.

James was arrested in March after fires broke out at an abandoned house on Leland Street and a home on Catherine Street in Ottawa.  Prosecutors say she set the fires in an attempt to cover up stealing over 100 thousand dollars from an Ottawa church.  She was the church’s secretary.
