Judge says Mackowiak will remain in isolation

Posted by wlpo on April 10, 2010

An accused double murderer from Seneca won’t be getting out of isolation at the La Salle County Jail.

Judge H. Chris Ryan denied a motion by Keith Mackowiak and his public defenders Friday to have him put back in general population at the jail.  Ryan said he wasn’t sure he had the authority to make the jail change where Mackowiak is kept.  Mackowiak and his lawyers say all the time in isolation hurts his mental health and ability to contribute to his defense.

He’s been in jail since July 2007 when he was arrested for the beating deaths of a rural Seneca couple.  Mackowiak was out of isolation for a few weeks last year when he allegedly got into an altercation with two inmates.

A new status hearing on the case is next Friday.
