County Extension Offices Could Close

Posted by wlpo on April 9, 2010

There are probably a lot of uneasy extension office workers these days.

State extension officials announced today a plan to cut 46 county extension director positions and consolidate extension offices from 77 to 30 because of state budget cuts.  Which directors get cut and what offices get consolidated isn’t known yet according to La Salle County Extension Director Steve Malinsky.

Malinsky says his office in Ottawa has only three full-time workers including himself.  They have 12 part-timers.  Malinsky says his office already downsized a few years ago when they didn’t replace employees.

Malinsky and other extension directors are being asked to propose a unit configuration by May 10th.  By May 19th, the state will let extension directors know if their proposal is accepted or needs to be changed.
